another time, another place

Time, language and culture divide us from the original Kindergarten of Friedrich Froebel at Bad Blankenburg, Thuringia, Germany in 1837.

Games, play, songs and stories stimulated the imagination of children and developed their bodies. Within fifty years, this Garden for Children was to spread around the world crossing barriers of language and culture to beocome a universal experience of childhood.

The book Inventing Kindergarten visually recreates this nineteenth century phenomenom. The children of these kindergartens shaped the world in which we live. The approach to education demonstrated in these kindergartens changed the way we think about learning.

Holding the Froebel blocks we begin to experience the process at the heart of Froebel's kindergarten. We discover the joy of learning and see for ourselves the unity of nature as the lessons unfold in our fingers.

This is the genius of Friedrich Froebel.

He was able to develop his ideas beyond words, into a tangible form, which became child's play.

Inventing Kindergarten

Inventing Kindergarten uses extraordinary visual materials to reconstruct this successful system, to teach young children about art, design, mathematics, and nature.
