Enid (Mary) Blyton 1896-1968

author of over 600 children's books

Blyton was born in London. She was trained as a Froebel kindergarten teacher, and opened her own infants' school. Blyton started to contribute and later she edited the journal Sunny Stories. Her first book, Child Whispers, a collection of verse, appeared in 1922. She also compiled a children's encyclopaedia. During the 1930s, her children's stories started to attract a wide audience.

Blyton's most famous series were The Famous Five (television series in 1995), the Secret Seven, and Adventure books. Her writing paints an idyllic vision of rural England and has been translated into nearly seventy languages.
